A special exhibition featuring artworks connected to the Imperial family started Tuesday at the Tokyo National Museum in Ueno, Tokyo.

"The 30th Anniversary of the Enthronement / Cultural Exchanges of Their Majesties the Emperor and Empress: Sharing the Beauty of Japan" runs through April 29. It is the first event launched as part of the "Tsumugu Project: Promoting, Restoring and Preserving the Beauty of Japan's Art," an initiative jointly planned by the Cultural Affairs Agency, the Imperial Household Agency and The Yomiuri Shimbun.

The exhibition displays tributes to the Imperial family presented at times of festive events, Japanese artworks introduced by the Emperor and Empress on their visits to foreign countries, their costumes that symbolize Japan's silk culture, among others.

"We hope this exhibition becomes an opportunity for visitors to deepen their understanding of Japan's beauty and culture," Yomiuri Shimbun Holdings President Toshikazu Yamaguchi said.
