An item launched off a bridge in Larkhall caused damage to a motorist's bonnet and windscreen.
Lanarkshire Police say it's fortunate that no-one was injured, as officers probe for information.
The moving vehicle was heading northbound on the M74 near to Junction 8 at around 11.40pm on Sunday night.
Cops are calling it an act of culpable and reckless conduct and residents are urged to come forward to help with the investigation.
The item was thrown from a farm access bridge and struck the vehicle passing through.
A police spokesperson said: "An item was thrown off a farm access bridge onto a moving vehicle below as it was travelling northbound on the M74 near to Junction 8, Larkhall.
"Could've been far worse"
"The item struck the vehicle, causing damage to the bonnet and windscreen.
"Luckily, no one was injured during this incident but it could've been far worse.
