Itchy Scalp: How to soothe an itchy scalp during winter

Many people find that having an itchy scalp is a common and annoying issue throughout the winter months. The combination of indoor warmth and the chilly, dry air can deplete the scalp's natural moisture, causing it to become uncomfortable and irritated. Here are the reasons behind wintertime scalp irritation and you may deal with it.

Causes of itchy scalp

The air is chilly and dry throughout the winter, and inside heating systems make it even worse. The absence of moisture in the atmosphere can cause the scalp to become dehydrated, which can itch and hurt.

Some people wash their hair less often in the winter to protect their heads from the chilly water, which often results in oil buildup, dead skin cells, and product residue which again is a factor that aggravates scalp itching.

The winter weather can make conditions like psoriasis and eczema worse. These skin conditions can cause redness, flakiness, and excruciating itching on the scalp.

Hot showers may be soothing in the winter, but they can also deplete the natural oils on the scalp, making it dry and irritated. Here’s how to prevent your scalp from getting dry and itchy:

Hydrate your scalp

Make sure your scalp is properly hydrated to combat dryness. Use shampoos and conditioners with moisturizing properties to enhance the hydration of your hair and scalp. Seek for products with provitamin B5, hibiscus, or aloe vera as ingredients.

Frequent hair washing

Prasanna Vasanadu, Founder Tikitoro says, “Wash your hair frequently to maintain proper hygiene. Use lukewarm water instead of cold water if that's a problem. Cleanse your scalp with a gentle, sulfate-free shampoo to avoid removing essential oils.”

Deep conditioning

To restore moisture, give your hair deep conditioning treatments. Think about adding natural oils to your scalp, like aloe vera, castor or olive oil, and letting them there for at least half an hour before washing.

Avoid scratching

Although it could seem alluring to pick at an irritated scalp, do not do so, since it will just make it worse. In order to increase blood flow and lessen itching, softly massage your scalp with your fingertips.

Scalp massages

In order to battle dryness, scalp massages can encourage the natural synthesis of oils and increase blood circulation. Teens should be encouraged to use their fingertips to give their hair a light massage as part of their regimen. This uniformly distributes natural oils like argan, castor or olive oil, in addition to offering relief.

Protecting the scalp especially during winters is highly essential particularly in Teenagers. People can enjoy the winter months without having to deal with the discomfort of a scratchy scalp by learning the causes and putting these practical solutions into practice.
