There was drama at Wembley on the opening night of the Euro 2020 knockout stages as Italy needed extra-time to squeeze past Austria and into the quarter-finals.
The Italians struggled to hit the highs of their group stage masterclasses in a goalless opening 90 minutes and Austria might have won it had VAR not ruled out Marko Arnautovic’s header for offside.
However, the game exploded into life in extra-time as a pair of substitutes Federico Chiesa and Matteo Pessina looked to have put Italy well on their way to victory, only for Sasa Kalajdzic’s header to set up a nervy finale.
In the end, though, Roberto Mancini’s side held on to join Denmmark in the quarter-finals of the tournament, where they will face the winner of Sunday’s clash between Belgium and Portugal.
