Italy v England Six Nations match to be played behind closed doors if it goes ahead amid coronavirus outbreak

The Six Nations match between Italy and England will be played behind closed doors.

The Italian government tonight announced a ban on supporters attending any sporting event in the country until April 3.

The final round match is scheduled to take place in Rome on March 14.

Earlier on Wednesday it emerged ITV and the BBC have reportedly abandoned plans to send staff to the matches, with big name pundits told to stay at home.

ITV's live TV coverage will use an Italian broadcast feed, while the analysts will be based in London.

The Six Nations, RFU and Italian Federation are yet to comment but the game could even be scrapped altogether.

The Ireland v Italy game which was scheduled for this weekend has already been cancelled.

Six Nations officials are determined for any postponed matches to be replayed, although that could happen as late as October.

The Italian decree affects all areas of the country, including those places were the virus has not been found.

It also states that sporting clubs and organisations are responsible for checking their players and staff for coronavirus.

More than 100 people have now died from coronavirus in Italy.
