Italy's Capital of Culture for 2022 is the ridiculously beautiful Procida island

Travel may not be on the cards right now, but Italy is serving up heaps of wanderlust fodder for us to daydream about.

First the country add six new spots to the official list of its most beautiful towns, then it unveiled a City of Wine for 2021.

Now, we're getting even more inspiration, courtesy of dreamy island Procida that's set to be Italy's Capital of Culture 2022.

The hotspot, which sits just off the coast of Naples, looks like it could have come straight from a a storybook with all of its buildings painted in an array of rainbow colours, postcard-worthy azure waters, a beautiful harbour and plenty of charming shops and restaurants to check out.

It's no wonder that it beat out the 27 other hotspots that applied for the accolade, impressing the judging panel not only for its landscapes for its possibilities around 'sustainable development'.

The island was one of 10 finalists - the other hotspots which impressed included Ancona, Bari, Cerveteri, L'Aquila, Pieve di Soligo, Taranto, Trapani, Verbania and Volterra.

Dario Franceschini, Minister for Cultural Heritage and Activities and Tourism in Italy, revealed the winner earlier this year.

He said in a statement at the time: "It is a complicated year for everyone, we are trying to support cultural and tourist activities in every way and today's designation of the Italian capital of culture for 2022 is a signal for the future, for recovery. In 2022 we will be back to normal and culture and tourism will be as important and very strong as they were before the pandemic."

At the moment the pandemic continues to wreak havoc on travel with ongoing restrictions and travel bans. However, it doesn't hurt to dream a little about where we'll go the day we can start exploring again.
