Italy names Barolo as 'City of Wine' for 2021 and we can't wait to visit

Wine enthusiasts may want to add Barolo in Italy to their bucket list, as the breathtaking hotspot has just been named Italy's official 'City of Wine' for 2021.

Although it's actually a town rather than a city, Barolo still beat out six other towns to pick up the accolade, which is awarded by Italy's Città del Vino Association.

Other locations which were considered included Bianco, Duino Aurisina, Montepulciano, Montespertoli, Taurasi and Tollo.

It's no surprise that Barolo in Piedmont has been crowned the winner. It's already a firm favourite with wine connoisseurs thanks to its sprawling vineyards (there is some seriously beautiful scenery to be found in the region) as well as its plethora of wineries and wine shops.

The Barolo red wine produced in the Piedmont region from the nebbiolo grape is hailed as some of the best in Italy, not to mention it's stocked in shops around the world.

The hotspot also boasts a breathtaking location, nestled in the Langhe valley surrounded by lush green hills (almost all of which are vineyard-cultivated).

Oh, and for something a little bit different, there's even a Corkscrew Museum which pays tribute to the handy tool, and highlights some quirky corkscrews to be found too.

To celebrate its new title, Barolo will be hosting a fun programme of events next year which will include exhibitions on the local region and the history of wine in Italy, 'twinning' with other Italian hotspots renowned for its wine-marking, as well as seminars and tastings. (All of the events will be dependent on the Covid-19 situation at the time of course).
