Italy locks down entire country over Coronavirus fears

Italy has extended the Coronavirus restriction zone to cover the entire country.

Previously the restriction zone applied to the north of the country, but this has now been extended.

Italians are being told to stay at home and all sport matches across the country have been cancelled.

The BBC's Rome Correspondent Mark Lowen tweeted the news this evening.

He said: " #Italy PM #Conte announces the restriction zone will be extended to cover the whole country. No longer just a red zone in the north - all of Italy.

"Tells Italians to stay at home, to think of the common good, to play their part to combat #Coronavirus . Cancels all sports matches across the country."

366 people have died from the virus in Italy, with 7,375 people infected with the condition.

Schools, gyms, museums, nightclubs and other venues across the whole country have been closed.

The restrictions will last until 3 April.
