Italy lifts all Covid entry requirements for holidaymakers from today

Italy has dropped all Covid entry requirements for holidaymakers from today.

The rule change means that travellers no longer require to show proof of vaccination, a negative test result or a Covid recovery certificate from June 1.

All passengers entering Italy by plane, ferry or coach must continue to wear a FFP2 mask in order to enter the country.

The news comes as Covid cases in the country continue to fall, according to the latest Italian government data.

Italy has been considered by many to be the initial European epicentre of the pandemic, as cases surged in the country during the early part of 2020.

The country was one of the first in Europe to announce a full scale lockdown in a bid to save lives from the virus.

A number of the strict health protection measures were retained across the country in the months that followed.

Holidaymakers will still be required to wear masks at a number of indoor events, cinemas and on transport while in Italy.

The news of the entry restrictions being lifted will be welcome for many UK holidaymakers, with millions expected to jet off abroad this summer.

One department that has been severely disrupted due to a two year backlog of holidays is HM Passport Office.

The government body has already processed through a large number of applications, which many people in the UK have held off on doing over the past two years.

Officials anticipate 9.5 million British passport applications to be made this year.

Anyone requiring their passport has been advised allow up to 10 weeks when applying for the vital travel documents.
