Italy international travel rules: Covid quarantine dropped for vaccinated holidaymakers

Italy will be dropping its five-day quarantine rule for fully vaccinated holidaymakers arriving next week.

The popular holiday destination had introduced the restrictions amid the spread of the Delta variant of the coronavirus in late June.

However, Italy's Minister of Health Roberto Speranza yesterday announced the 'mini-quarantine' rule is being scrapped from Tuesday (September 1).

UK travellers who have received both doses of the vaccine will now only be asked to show a negative Covid-19 test to avoid quarantining, The Mirror reports.

Mr Speranza tweeted: "I signed an order extending the restrictive measures for arrivals from other countries.

"The five-day mini-quarantine is required for those coming from the United Kingdom in the event that the vaccination cycle has been completed and at the same time there is a negative test."

The Italian Embassy in the UK comments: "As of September 1, people fully vaccinated traveling from the UK to Italy do not have to quarantine. Negative pre departure test (48 hour) and passenger locator form still required."

An estimated 14 percent of Italy’s GDP is derived from the tourism industry, which has been devastated during the pandemic.

The decision to scrap the quarantine period for travellers comes after Italy reported 54 Covid deaths, bringing the total since the start of the pandemic to 129,056 - the second-highest toll in Europe after Britain.

The country also recorded 860 virus new infections on Saturday (August 28).

Italy is currently on the international travel system amber list, which means those who are not double jabbed need to self-isolate at home for 10 days upon return to the UK and take PCR tests on days two and eight.

Holidaymakers returning to the UK have the option of paying for another test on day five to release them from quarantine early, however the test on day eight must still be taken.
