Italy in new Covid crackdown on winter sports holidays with 'super green pass'

Italy has become the latest destination to increase its Covid restrictions because of an increase in the number of cases.

The new crackdown is likely to hit tourists visiting winter holiday destinations and ski resorts and follows similar moves in Tenerife and Austria.

A “super green pass” vaccine passport is now essential for visitors to Italy to access many venues and public transport, including ski lifts, bars, hotels and restaurants. However, the NHS Covid Pass QR code is acceptable for UK citizens.

It applies to all those aged over 12s and unvaccinated people can no longer enter establishments by producing a negative test result.

Austria is operating similar restrictions for ski resorts and it has been claimed other nations may introduce further curbs. Many skiers have chosen to visit Italy and Switzerland this winter after France banned UK holidaymakers in December.

Meanwhile, Italy has made winter sports insurance mandatory for tourists. Skiers and snowboarders must now have valid third party liability insurance with penalties including a fine up to €150 and the withdrawal of a ski pass.

It is estimated that up to 20 per cent of UK winter sports enthusiasts do not take out insurance for their ski holiday.

Winter sports holiday operators are hoping the change in UK travel testing rules will kickstart an increase in bookings.
