Italy imposes five-day quarantine on UK tourists as Delta variant spreads

Scots heading to Italy will be forced to quarantine for five days due to concerns over the spread of the Delta variant.

The country's Health Minister Roberto Speranza announced the new restrictions on Friday, with UK travellers arriving in Italy also having to take a Covid-19 swab test.

Italy is currently on Scotland's amber list, meaning travellers are required to self-isolate for 10 days and take coronavirus tests.

However, the self-isolation period does not have to be done in one of Scotland's government-approved airport hotels and can be done at home.

It comes as Italy is lifting curbs on travellers from the United States, Canada, Japan and other European Union countries if they have a green pass showing they are vaccinated or recently tested negative.

A ban on people arriving from India, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka will remain in place.

Italy is following in the footsteps of France, Austria and Germany, which have already introduced varying curbs on those entering from Britain.

International travel reopened in May, with Scots able to travel abroad for the first time in months.

However, Nicola Sturgeon has repeatedly urged people not to book a foreign holiday this summer and instead staycation at home.

The First Minister has said that while there is a traffic light system of safe countries to travel to, no one should go abroad unless they really have to.
