Italy give official update as to when Irish tourists could start visiting again

Italy is one of the worst affected places by Covid-19 in the world, but is now looking towards the future.

The country is one of the most popular with Irish tourists, but they are likely to have to give 2020 a miss if they were planning any trips.

Non-essential travel abroad is currently not advised but even when restrictions are eased in Ireland, they may not be the same in Italy.

The country's officials have said that from a tourism point of view 2020 may as well be "written off".

Italy's tourism secretary Lorenza Bonaccorsi told AFP: "It will take one or two years to get back to where we were, but 2020 might as well be written off.

"It is still impossible to say when Italy... will come out of the health emergency.

"This might be the time to move away from mass tourism, towards one more respectful of the environment.

"You will not see the long queues outside the Colosseum you used to."

The tourism association Corti also thinks the industry will have to change. It said: "Who will have the courage to get on a high-speed Freccia Rossa (train) carriage filled with 80 passengers or a low-cost airline with 270?"

But while tourists from outside might not be allowed back in, Italians themselves are looking towards how they can start enjoying the beaches again.

In an appearance on state Rai television, Mr Bonaccorsi said: "We’ll be going to the beach this summer."

When asked how they would do this safely, the Minister said: "We’re working on it."

Even though the nationwide lockdown is set to end on May 3, Italians are being told to expect a gradual opening-up of the country with strict rules still in place.
