Italy 1-0 Wales: Wales into last 16 at the Euros despite narrow defeat in Rome

Wales showed great resolve after going down to 10 men to secure a result that sends them into the last 16 at Euro 2020.

The Welsh secured runners-up spot in Group A on goal difference after they went down 1-0 against Italy in Rome and Switzerland beat Turkey 3-1 in Baku in the other match in the group.

Wales played most of the second half against Italy with 10 men after Ethan Ampadu was sent off but they dug deep to keep the score at 1-0 and reach the knockout stage.

They will play the runner up in Group B, which contains Belgium, Denmark, Russia and Finland, in the last 16 in Amsterdam next Saturday.

Italy go through as group winners and are now unbeaten in 30 games, meaning they have equalled their all-time longest unbeaten run of 30 games between 1935 and 1939.

The Italians have also now go over 1,000 minutes without conceding a goal.

Switzerland will have to wait and see if their four points is enough to get them through as one of the best third-placed teams

A first-half goal from Matteo Pessina was enough to give Italy victory against Wales.

Italy asserted their control early on and went close through Andrea Belotti and Federico Chiesa before they went ahead through Pessina in the 39th minute.

A brilliantly worked free-kick from Marco Verratti from the right found Pessina at the front post and he guided it across Wales goalkeeper Danny Ward with a lovely finish.

Bernardeschi hit the post with a free kick at the start of the second half and Wales’ task got harder when Ampadu was shown a straight card for a late foul on Bernardeschi.

Gareth Bale wasted a great chance when blasted a left-footed effort over the bar when he was totally unmarked in the penalty area.

But Wales dug deep and withstood relentless Italian pressure to scrape through in second place.
