Italian team forced to give assurances over coronavirus as they play in Wales tonight a week after home match cancelled

The Dragons' game against Benetton at Rodney Parade tonight will go ahead as scheduled after the Italian side provided league officials with written assurances over coronavirus.

Guinness PRO14 organisers say they requested and received assurances from Benetton Rugby that 'nobody in their travelling party has presented any symptoms associated with the virus'.

The visitors also insisted that none of their travelling party have 'knowingly been in contact with any person with the virus or travelled to any of the so-called 'lockdown' areas in northern Italy since 19 February 2020'.

Benetton's home game against Ulster last weekend was postponed due to fears over the virus.

It is understood that the Italian side have not returned home since travelling to Wales to face the Cardiff Blues on February 23.

“We want to reassure our participating clubs, their players and other staff and supporters that their well-being is of paramount importance to us," said PRO14 tournament director David Jordan.

"We are satisfied that proceeding with this fixture is entirely consistent with the most up-to-date advice available from the relevant public health authorities."

The statement from the PRO14 also points out there is currently restriction on travel from Italy to the UK.

They also point out that the PRO14 matches in Italy that have been postponed is 'due to restrictions imposed by the Italian government and the direction of the Irish government regarding unnecessary travel to northern Italy'.
