Italian media predict Leeds United involvement in three-way Erick Pulgar tug-of-war

Two weeks into the January transfer window and Leeds United have stood firm on their intention to keep their noses clean in the winter market.

The club do not intend to do much - if any - incoming business, and any additions will likely be those who will supplement the U23s squad.

That has not stopped the transfer rumour mill churning out links to various players across Europe, with Italian website CalcioMercato the latest to report Leeds could be interested in Fiorentina's Erick Pulgar.

The 27-year-old Chilean is widely understood to be available this window, as per local news source La Nazione, but Leeds' reluctance to do business this winter means a deal remains unlikely.

Why are Leeds struggling going forward?

That said, CalcioMercato have equally attributed interest in Pulgar's services to La Liga duo Sevilla and Real Betis, both sides based in the southern Spanish city of Seville.

Pulgar featured off the bench in Fiorentina's most recent, humiliating defeat; a 6-0 drubbing at the hands of Napoli. The Serie A side are currently languishing in the bottom half, just five points above the relegation zone.

Italian sources claim that Pulgar is deemed expendable at Stadio Artemio Franchi, which has given rise to the Leeds United links.

CalcioMercato's latest claim is that Leeds would be willing to stump up €25 million which is at odds with the feeling emanating from the club.

While the hierarchy are determined to continue their modernisation of the infrastructure and playing squad, the fanbase must be aware it is a gradual process, which will happen over multiple seasons and multiple transfer windows.

Bielsa is not thought to like too much mid-season upheaval, and as seen through his team selection in recent seasons, enjoys having a reliable, settled squad to count on most weeks. Adding players who will need time to acclimatise and assimilate is perhaps not top of Bielsa's agenda and would not at all be entirely necessary given Leeds have a 97% chance of achieving their goal for this season, according to analytics gurus FiveThirtyEight.

Given Marcelo Bielsa's standing in Chile, Pulgar's playing style, his lack of minutes currently, and United's reported interest in Serie A targets last summer, it appears CalcioMercato have connected the dots.

Whether those dots lead to the door of Leeds United and credible interest, or go round in circles as baseless transfer rumour is up for debate. At present though, a deal is unlikely during this current window.
