Leeds United's January transfer window is destined to be a quiet one, however that has not deterred journalists in Italy from speculating over the future of Fiorentina midfielder Erick Pulgar.
There is supposedly interest from Leeds United's side, however the club's stance on the winter market is at odds with any reports linking Pulgar with a move to the club this January.
As per Sport Witness, La Nazione journalist Angelo Giorgetti has claimed Pulgar is expendable in Florence.
"I think that Pulgar can leave at the right conditions, and Leeds is a concrete opportunity,” Giorgetti is quoted as saying to local broadcaster Radio Bruno.
While he claims it is an opportunity, at present it is no more than just that, an opportunity which Leeds have not exercised.
This claim is corroborated by SportItaliaTV presenter Gianluigi Longari, who tweeted yesterday that there was still no 'proposal' for the midfielder, despite reported interest.
While Leeds United's position on transfers is clear - they do not intend to do any January business - Fiorentina appear willing to offload the Pulgar who has started just five Serie A games this season.
It is quite the fall from prominence for the Viola man who turned 27 yesterday.
Last year he was a pivotal fixture of Fiorentina's side, a long-standing column in their midfield who missed just one game all season.
La Nazione's stance on the midfielder is that it is probable he will leave the club, although he did feature from the start in Fiorentina's most recent Serie A game - a 1-0 win over Cagliari.
It is reported by Corriere Fiorentino that Fiorentina hope to add a defensive midfielder in the mould of Lucas Torreira who is out of favour on loan at Atletico Madrid and has links to Italy.
That said, they will only pursue such a move if they manage to sell Pulgar this window.
Stylistically, Pulgar fits the brief for a Leeds United midfielder; he is versatile, capable of playing as a defensive midfielder or as a more Mateusz Klich-type box-to-box presser. He has also been known to be a rather reliable creative influence and was one of La Viola's resident spot-kick takers last season.
Still, speculation remains as such and no approach has been made by the club in contacting Fiorentina over the player's availability.
