The battered City economy was handed a major boost on Tuesday when  Italian themed food mall operator Eataly said it will press ahead with its first UK outlet early next year.

Eataly London will be based in Broadgate next to Liverpool Street station and will have three restaurants, a cookery school, an Italian wine shop and a “market” with more than 5000 products.

The launch, expected in the first quarter of 2021, will create more than 300 jobs.

Confirmation of the £25 million opening — first revealed in the Standard in 2017 — will be seen as a huge vote of confidence in the recovery of the Square Mile at a time when only a tiny fraction of the normal number of office workers are back at their desks.

Eataly chief executive, Nicola Farinetti, said: “London has been a key target in our global expansion plans for some time now and we’re happy to be bringing our vision and a love of high-quality food to the UK.”

He added: “Bringing people together is at the heart of what we do and this is even more important in the current climate.”

Eataly London Store Manager, Matteo Ferrio said: “We are of course considering the safety and comfort of visitors and employees, and we will be sure to comply with the relevant guidelines, so everyone can have the proper Eataly experience with peace of mind.”
