Italian club linked with former Hibs and Celtic hero as sporting director makes transfer admission

Hibernian hero Liam Henderson is wanted on a permanent deal by Italian side Empoli after impressing on loan for the Tuscan side.

The 24-year-old became the first Scottish player since Graeme Souness to play in Serie A last season, but struggled to hold down a place at parent club Hellas Verona.

The Scottish Cup hero dropped down to Serie B with Empoli on loan in January, however the side suffered an agonising play-off defeat to Chievo after securing a seventh-placed finish.

Empoli had an option to make the move permanent before June 30, only for the coronavirus pandemic to put pay to those plans.

However, sporting director Pietro Accardi admitted the club could still make a move for the midfielder - who wrote himself into Hibs folklore with his delivery for David Gray's winner in the 2016 Scottish Cup final.

Henderson scored once in 13 appearances for the second tier outfit.

Speaking at the presentation of Alessio Dionisi as the side's new manager, Accardi said: "Liam is a player we liked and he left us with good memories.

"If there is a possibility of signing him again for the new season, we would love to take that opportunity."
