'It wouldn't surprise me' - Pundit tips Bristol City for play-offs after Derby County win

Former England striker Kevin Phillips has backed Bristol City to make the play-offs.

Phillips was appearing on Sky Sports' Debate after the Robins got back to winning ways with a 3-2 victory over Derby County - a result that means they sit just three points off second place.

Praising City boss Lee Johnson, Phillips said he can see the Robins making the top six this season due to the fact they have the ability to pick up results at important times.

He said: "Lee Johnson, again, he's been there quite a few years and has been close to the play-offs.

"He's been under pressure at times but they've stuck by him and he's done a great job.

"He always seems to get results, and again tonight.

"At one point it looked like they were going to run away with it but Derby, with the form they've shown of late, then looked like they were going to make a comeback.

"That will be a blow for Derby as they would really have been looking at the play-offs - Cocu would have said if they kept performing they had a chance.

"Lee Johnson has done a wonderful job and it wouldn't surprise me if they do secure a play-off spot."

Former City boss Tony Pulis was alongside Phillips on the programme but stopped short of making a prediction on whether his old side will make the top six.

However, he said that the victory was vital for the Robins after they had suffered a disappointing defeat to Birmingham City on Friday night to drop to seventh in the table.

He said: "It was important that they bounced back.

"They had a bad result on Friday and if they hadn't won today it would have been a bad week for them.

"They've won the game and they'll march into the next game now with more confidence.

"I've picked two that I think will get promoted but then it could be any four that follow them up."
