'It will stop raining.' Sunny skies predicted for weekend

"It will stop raining, it always stops raining."

Comforting words from the Bureau of Meteorology's ACT/NSW Manager Agata Imielska.

Unfortunately, Canberrans will have to wait another day for sunny skies, which are expected at the weekend.

There's a very high chance of rain on Friday, with the possibility of heavy falls and thunderstorms.

BOM reports that winds southerly will blow 15 to 20 kilometres per hour becoming light before dawn then southerly 25 to 35 kilometres per hour early in the morning.

Ms Imielska said there would continue to be heavy rainfall on the south coast on Friday.

"Friday, we are going to see quite heavy rainfall on the south coast in particular," she said.

"Broadly, it'll bring widespread rainfall across the southeast, including Canberra and the surrounding ACT region.

"We do have that chance of a sound of thunderstorms developing. So there's always that risk of localized heavier falls. And with that is that risk of flash flooding, as well as riverine flooding."

There is light at the end of the tunnel, with the weekend expected to be sunnier. While clouds might dampen the mood on Saturday they are expected to ease off on Sunday.

A maximum of 21 degrees Celsius is forecast for Saturday, and a maximum of 23 degrees Celsius is forecast for Sunday.

"Friday [rain] will still be a bit around but significantly easing and then really seeing improved trend over the weekend and into the new week as well, which is good to hear," Ms Imielska said.

"So there will be a bit of a break for the weekend.

"[But] Saturday especially, we do have the potential for hazardous surf.

"So even if the sun is out if you're planning a trip down to the south coast, just keep keep in mind that conditions on the coast on Saturday in particular might be hazardous as this weather clears off offshore."
