The Meghan Markle Netflix show needs all the positive attention it can get, especially now that the streaming giant has changed the terms of its contract with the Sussexes. However, the grand announcement of With Love, Meghan season two was practically buried after Taylor Swift decided to announce her new album on the same day.
According to an exclusive report from royal reporter Rob Shuter, Meghan is not happy with the 35-year-old singer. While most would chalk it up to an unfortunate coincidence she is reportedly “convinced” that this was an intentional ploy on Swift’s part to steal her big moment.
Meghan Markle was hoping her announcement would dominate the news
The Duchess of Sussex dropped the announcement trailer for the second part of her Netflix cooking show on August 12th. The trailer wasn’t particularly well received with fans taking issue with some of the guests featured in it. Regardless, an insider told Shuter that “Meghan thought her trailer would own the news cycle.”
But that simply wasn’t the case as Swift made an even bigger announcement later that same day. She appeared on the New Heights podcast to speak to fans and reveal her upcoming album, The Life of a Showgirl. “Taylor’s announcement came in like a wrecking ball. Meghan’s convinced it wasn’t just bad luck.”
The move from Swift tore what was supposed to be Meghan’s moment away from her. Another insider added, “She saw this as her comeback moment… Then Taylor took all the oxygen out of the room.”
Was it really intentional?
It’s hard to imagine Swift would intentionally go out of her way to sabotage Meghan’s big day. While it’s certainly possible she knew of Meghan’s announcement before Swift appeared on her boyfriend’s podcast, but it seems unlikely. On the other hand, the pop singer has made an enemy of Meghan by choosing William over Harry in the royal feud, so maybe she really is trying to ruin the Sussexes.
Shuter claims that the Duchess of Sussex loves being at the center of attention which is why she’s so upset with Swift. However, so far it seems her announcement has exclusively received negative attention. It seems as though Meghan’s show was always doomed to fail regardless.
The first season was met with some rather poor reviews and hype for the follow-up already seemed non-existent before Taylor Swift came along and stole the show. Coupled with the fact that Netflix recently downgraded the Sussexes deal to a first-look arrangement and it seems as though With Love Meghan season two would have been dead on arrival either way.
