'It was pure chaos': Gun-wielding police swoop on Shields Road takeaway

Armed police swarmed Shields Road after takeaway staff were reportedly threatened.

An onlooker told ChronicleLive the Byker street was "flooded" with gun-wielding police on Friday night.

"It was all kicking off and there were loads of people standing around near The Raby," said an unnamed witness.

"It was pure chaos, nobody knew what was going on but when you seen the guns you knew it was something serious.

"We got a right shock."

The scenes unfolded on Friday August 23, as revellers were enjoying a Bank Holiday booze-up.

Police swooped on reports that staff at Presto Pizza had been threatened.

"At about 10pm officers attended the scene where a man had making threats to staff," said a Northumbria Police spokesperson.

"He made off from the scene but officers were able to quickly locate him nearby on Shields Road.

"He was arrested on suspicion of being drunk and disorderly and has been given a penalty notice."

ChronicleLive attempted to contact the takeaway.
