It might be one of the highlights of Newcastle's calendar but this year's Plate Day has been branded 'farcical' after some bars ran out of beer - twice.
Miffed punters claim a Newcastle Racecourse bar ran out of beer not once but twice during Saturday's annual bash and Newcastle Racecourse blamed an "unforeseen replenishing issue".
"It was farcical at some of the bars," one drinker told ChronicleLive.
"It went off just before the second race, then again before one of the last races - they had (alcohol) as it came back on both times but they just seemed horribly underprepared.
"It was off for ages the first time, maybe about an hour. You could still get it at certain bars but queues were at least half an hour long."
But course bosses have now apologised for not having enough drink on Saturday.
A Newcastle Racecourse statement said: "First and foremost, we would like to apologise for any inconveniences caused on Saturday.
"Unfortunately, temporary bars in the Premier Enclosure experienced an unforeseen replenishing issue, which has since been reviewed closely.
"Consequently, procedures will be put in place to ensure this does not happen again.
"In spite of this isolated issue, we do hope that customers enjoyed what was a fantastic day of racing and entertainment.
"We look forward to Ladies Day, and showcasing our operational experience to full effect."
