'It was best I got myself away' - The gruesome reason Bristol Rovers' Tom Lockyer missed out on making an appearance for Wales

Tom Lockyer has revealed why he was unable to make an appearance for Wales in the recent international break.

The defender missed Bristol Rovers' dramatic 2-2 draw with fellow relegation battlers Plymouth Argyle due to being called up to Ryan Giggs' squad for games against Slovakia and Trinidad & Tobago.

Yet he did not make an appearance for his country, with Gas boss Graham Coughlan admitting his frustration at the situation.

However, Lockyer has revealed that a dodgy batch of king prawns put paid to the chances of him making an appearance - although he did try to get himself back for the Gas' game at Plymouth.

He said: "I was supposed to start against Trinidad and Tobago but the day before I had some food and went up to the room, I think it was king prawns.

"Everyone was like 'why did you eat that', and I thought I'd had king prawns a hundred times in my life and had never felt like that.

"I just went up to the room and curled up in a ball and couldn't move - I was just thinking 'oh no, please no'.

"I said to the doc to give me whatever he could to get me through but he said they didn't want me infecting the team, so it was best if I got myself away.

"It was gutting for me and I tried to make it back in time for Plymouth but I couldn't keep a meal down.

"It's not nice but what can you do? It's one of those things."

With no international break in League One, Lockyer admits it is difficult to leave Rovers to play for Wales, but says he does not want to turn his country down.

He said: "It would be nice if I can keep being recognised - every time I go away I try and do my very best.

"It's hard leaving the boys at Rovers, I feel like 'what should I do?' but it's a massive honour you can't really turn down.

"If I keep getting picked out then that's fantastic because I'm massively patriotic for Wales and hopefully that can continue."
