'It was an inferno': Inside the Northumberland family home destroyed by fire

A mum has revealed how her family home "went up like an inferno" in just a matter of minutes.

Firefighters spent four hours battling the flames which swept through Mandy Charlton's home, in Allendale, Northumberland, on Saturday.

New pictures show the devastation caused inside the home. However, the family say they have been overwhelmed by the love from friends and neighbours.

Over £4,000 has already been raised on a GoFundMe page - created by one of the firefighters who came to the rescue.

But after surveying the damage, Mandy admits: "It has totally gutted the kitchen and the utility room, and the roof is totally gone.

"But we were so lucky that we had the fire service just up the road - if we didn't, the whole house would have gone."

She's now praised the heroic actions of crews from across Northumberland who came to her rescue, including those nearby at Allendale Community Fire Station.

And in a touching tribute, the village arranged a surprise Clap for Carers-style clap at the station on Tuesday evening to show their appreciation after they had a weekend like no other.

"They are so brave as when they got to the house it was an absolute inferno," added Mandy.

"One of them climbed up a drain pipe to get one of our dogs, and another had to break the door to get the other two. They are amazing."

The fire was one of three major blazes in Northumberland over the weekend. One - in Blyth - broke out at almost the same time while a Haydon Bridge wildfire spread on Sunday.

In Allendale, Mandy believes the fire initially started somewhere outside the home before quickly spreading in.

"At 2.49 pm, my daughter left the house, and at 3.03 pm I had a phone call telling me that my house I'm on fire," she added.

"In that time, the house had gone up like an inferno."

Unable to re-enter the property kind neighbours have found them somewhere to stay.

"We have had so much support - on Saturday, people were out until 11.30pm helping, and some were donating food and money," said Mandy.

"The community has been absolutely amazing."

To date, £4,085 has been crowdfunded by Allendale fireman Matty Robson.

He'd initially set out to raise £1,000 for the Charlton's, who he said had "lost everything".

And while no cause has yet been firmly established, crews at Allendale Community Fire Station say it could have been so much worse.

"The hallway and rest of the house was devastated as the flames ripped through it but the doors to two rooms were closed," states a Facebook post.

"Even with the intensity of the flames and heat that are obvious, the doors protected the rooms.

"And that folks is why we tell you to keep doors closed. It could save a life or keep a fire contained giving us valuable time to respond."
