It was a moment all of Scotland had hoped for… the restoration of national pride after a dodgy start against the Czechs.
Now it was the Auld Enemy, who proved to be a team of overpaid prima donnas with skill in abundance but nothing to match the passion and determination Scotland had in spades.
At kick-off Love and Money singer James Grant set the tone when he tweeted: “S**t. I’m starting to believe again.”
And Karen Gillan kept it simple when she tweeted her 1.2 million followers to rally the team with: “Come on Scotland!!!!!!!!!!!!”
Minute by minute the hopes of the nation rose as the team worked their socks off.
And as the game drew to a close at half-time, former Celtic star and TV commentator Chris Sutton tweeted: “Scotland the better team in the first half… too many England players off the pace…”
Former Hearts player and TV pundit Michael Stewart tweeted: That’s exactly the sort of display we needed and will need again in the second half. Tremendous stuff from Scotland. Gilmour with an absolute masterclass in midfield.”
But Money Saving Expert Martin Lewis epitomised the English who had plenty to moan about and little excitement about them.
Lewis struggled to take the night off if his half-time chat on Twitter was anything to go by.
He said: “TV must be so happy to have got this fixture. Two home nations. The Euros.
“Friday night. It's raining (where I am at least) so more people are in.
“I’m guessing 14m viewers. I wonder how much the ad spots cost.”
BBC Breakfast’s Dan Walker summed up English sentiment when he tweeted: “Jack Grealish is in that lovely position at the moment where he gets better every minute he isn’t on the pitch! Trust Southgate.”
Piers Morgan showed his frustration, saying: “England look bored, and boring. Bring on Grealish.”
The big mouth presenter was later to change his tune and admit to Scotland being the superior team.
75 minutes in and Bluebells guitarist Robert Hodgens pleaded: “Make a positive change Scotland.”
Manager Steve Clarke must have been checking his Twitter.
A minute later Armstrong replaced Gilmour and provided added impetus as an attacking midfielder and Scotland continued to dominate.
It wasn’t long before Piers Morgan admitted: “Scotland are outplaying us. Fact.”
As the final whistle blew the jeers of the England fans could be heard loud and clear in the home nation’s stadium while the Tartan Army celebrated in droves.
And Sanjeev Kohli summed up the mood in Scotland tweeting: “BEST. GOALLESS. DRAW. EVER.”
While his Still Game pal Greg Hemphill added: “A well earned point. Get the posts burst, get the turf lifted and get up the road.”
Looking ahead, ex-Scotland legend John Collins summed up the hopes of the nation for Tuesday’s final Group D match at Hampden when he said: “Croatia are a good team. We are more than capable of beating them.”
Irvine Welsh tweeted: "Scotland surprised me big time. More than held their own against England and made them look like the shit, second tier European side they perennially seem destined to be. If Scotland had any forwards they’d be half decent."
The First Minister tweeted: “Yes, sir, you all boogied.”
Guilt and Bob Servant scriptwriter Neil Forsyth tweeted: “What a night. Going to Wembley and being disappointed with a point. Unforgettable.”
Oasis rocker Liam Gallagher summed up his feelings on Grealish nicely when he tweeted: “No room for hair bands in football.”
And Morgan was at it again, saying: "Scotland wanted it more than England & played with more fire, intensity, passion and drive. You can’t teach footballers those qualities. It’s about hunger & heart."
