A cordon was put in place after the crash and a section of the road was closed off.

Neighbours said they were shocked to see the street flooded with emergency services vehicles late last night.

Jemma Thompson, 40, told the M.E.N : "The lights were flashing so we came outside.

"There was an ambulance, two police cars and a white off-duty BMW police car.

"Three streets were cordoned off.

"We went to bed at around 11.30pm and it was still in place then. I got up at 6am and everything was gone.

"Down here it's ridiculous the speed drivers go. It was upsetting to see it.

"At first I thought it was a police chase but my neighbour said a girl had been hit by a car."

Maureen King, 64, said it was a 'horrible thing to see'.

"It's devastating. I was heartbroken last night. There's nothing you can do", she added.

"I got up at 2am this morning and they were towing the car away.

"There were quite a few police cars, first they closed the roads off and the ambulance sorted the little girl.

Another eyewitness told the M.E.N how she was in bed when she heard a 'huge thud' outside.

"I ran outside and the mum was cradling the child in her arms", she said.

"The driver was distraught.

"Then ambulance came and blue-lighted the child to hospital."

In a statement, a GMP spokesperson said: "At around 10.25pm on Thursday 10 June, police were called to a collision between a car and a child on Lowton Road, Wigan.

"The child - a four-year-old girl - was taken to hospital with serious injuries.
