'It was a dark moment' - Nabil Fekir lifts lid on failed Liverpool transfer and blames agent

Nabil Fekir dominated the headlines in the summer of 2018 as the French international was on the verge of signing for Liverpool in a deal worth a reported £53m.

The Reds had already secured Monaco midfielder Fabinho, Naby Keita finally moved from RB Leipzig and Fekir was supposed to be next, if all had gone to plan.

The move was all but done.

However, in a dramatic turn of events, Liverpool decided to pull the plug on the deal at the last minute and there was plenty of speculation over why the move broke down.

Rumours rumbled on throughout the summer, some saying there were problems with the medical.

Three years on, Fekir has spoken on numerous occasions and maintains the deal wasn't called off due to concerns over a knee injury.

Now, the 28-year-old has claimed it was his agent that stood in the way of his dream move to Liverpool.

“It was a dark moment,” Fekir told The Times . “I saw plenty of things which weren’t true. It was said the knee stopped me going to Liverpool but that wasn’t true.

"I went to Clairefontaine [France’s football centre near Paris], and they did all the proof [medical] and the knee was fine.

"I had a problem with my agent, my adviser. It was the agent responsible for the deal not going through.

“Of course I was disappointed not to go to Liverpool, very disappointed because Liverpool are a great club."

Fekir remained at Lyon for the 2018/19 season before finally securing a move away from France, a year later than he'd hoped.

In 2019, the attacking midfielder joined La Liga side Real Betis for £17.7m, a significantly lower fee than the £53m Liverpool were set to pay the previous summer.

Liverpool instead signed Alisson Becker and Xherdan Shaqiri, in addition to Fabinho and Keita, to round-off a busy summer that propelled them to a Champions League trophy in 2019.
