‘It usually doesn’t look like this’: Costco shopper buys Kirkland cheese slices. Then she opens the package

One Costco shopper was unsatisfied with the Kirkland Medium Cheddar Cheese Slices she got from the store.

In a viral TikTok, Siera Bearchell (@sierabearchell) says it is her first and last time buying the cheese. Then she demonstrates why.

As she pulls the wax paper separating two slices, the slice on top breaks, leaving a chunk attached to the slice beneath. She tries to remove the chunk but is unable to because there is no wax paper between the layers. The pack appears to come with two stacks of cheese slices with only one piece of wax paper separating the top slice from the rest; the rest are stuck together and difficult to separate from one another.

“I’m just trying to make a grilled cheese,” Bearchell writes in the caption, accompanied by a crying emoji.

‘I would just eat the brick’

In the comments section, viewers offered several explanations for why the Costco cheese broke.

User Fiona Doerksen said, “It’s because it’s real cheese and not heavily processed.”

“FR if they made the little divider paper a little longer it could fix everything,” user C.mac wrote.

Some viewers pointed out that the marbled cheddar cheese does not tend to break.

User Binou explained, “The higher fat content in pure cheddar makes it more brittle so it does this. Marble doesn’t because it has lower fat mozzarella mixed in, who’s water content helps it bend without breaking.”

Why does cheddar break so easily?

Cheese brand Cabot answered this question by saying, “As natural cheddar ages, it typically becomes drier and more crumbly in texture. Many cheddar connoisseurs prefer this type of cheddar. However, in extreme cases of crumbly cheddar, it is possible that the cheese accidentally froze, perhaps in transit or in storage. While the cheese is still fine for eating, melts well, and works nicely to flavor your favorite recipes, it may be more difficult to work with.”

Additionally, in response to a Redditor who posted pictures of their broken-up cheese slices to the r/mildlyinfuriating sub, a former deli worker said cheese slices sometimes break apart when separating because they are too thin.

“Next time get it thicker or if you like it that thin, have the deli person stack the slices between layers of those little plastic sheets,” they suggest. “That way the slices don’t touch and can’t stick together.”
