It turns out Sum 41 guitarist Dave 'Brownsound' Baksh is a Newcastle United fan - and here's why

Punk rockers Sum 41 have played Newcastle many times over the years, but did you know their guitarist is a Newcastle United fan?

Newcastle's O2 Academy today tweeted a picture of Dave Baksh's guitar pick, which staff found underneath the venue's stage.

The plectrum is personalised with a Newcastle United crest and Dave's nickname, 'Brownsound'.

O2 Academy tweeted: "Look what we just found under our stage from who knows when. Who knew that Brownsound from Sum 41 was an NUFC fan?"

Of course, Dave could have got the guitar pick as a keepsake on the day of a gig.

As venue manager Jordon Ditchburn told ChronicleLive, bands are known to get equipment tailored for the city they are in.

"But, I thought I'd seen something on his Instagram before," Jordon said to ChronicleLive.

It turns out, Dave Baksh is a Newcastle fan, and has been since the mid-90s.

The guitarist has posted about NUFC on his Instagram. In 2016, he uploaded a screenshot of a BBC article, confirming Rafa Benitez was staying on as Newcastle United manager.

"My God!!! It happened!! I can't believe how good today is," Dave wrote.

The 38-year-old from Toronto confirmed on Twitter that he is a United follower of 24 years.

Responding to the Academy's request to prove he is a Newcastle supporter, Brownsound tweeted: "Anytime! 24 years later and still in love with the club."

So what was the Canadian's motivation for getting in too deep with a football team from the North East of England?

In an interview with Total Guitar , Dave explained why his guitar pedal was 'adorned' with Newcastle United stickers.

"Because they’re the best, ha ha!," he told the magazine.

"I was on a rugby tour in 1995, got served breakfast in Wales, which had a Kellogg’s hologram of Alan Shearer scoring a header against Leeds United. I thought this guy looked pretty rad and he ended up being one of the best strikers of all time."
