"It takes you right back to that day" - dad of murdered GMP officer Nicola Hughes says death of newly-wed Pc reminds him of own tragedy

The father of murdered GMP officer Nicola Hughes has said the death of a newly-wed police officer killed in Berkshire has reminded him of his experiences seven years ago.

Bryn Hughes, the father of Pc Hughes, who was killed while on duty for Greater Manchester Police in 2012, appeared on BBC Breakfast on Saturday morning.

He said: "It takes you right back to that day. You get the same feelings and emotions, but you've got them for somebody else."

"You expect that she will be involved" in violent incidents, but "you don't expect her to lose her life".

Pc Andrew Harper died on Thursday after he was "dragged along by a vehicle" after responding to a burglary in the village of Sulhamstead.

The 28-year-old who joined the force in 2010, had only been married for four weeks following a 'dream wedding' to his new wife Lissie.

Thames Valley Police say 10 boys and men aged between 13 and 30 have been arrested on suspicion of murder and are in custody at various police stations in the area.

A post-mortem examination is taking place to establish the cause of death.

Chief Constable John Campbell said Pc Harper was a "highly regarded, popular member of the team".

"Everybody I've spoken to about Andrew talked about the incredible personality he was, what a fantastic police officer, and what a great friend and man he was, and he'll be sorely missed by everybody," Mr Campbell said.

Speaking about support he received from the public, Mr Hughes added: "You've got to focus on the 99% of the work that Nicola and Andrew did.

"You can't just look at the one thing that resulted in their death, if you do, that's not healthy for you."

Nicola, from Saddleworth, was just 23 when she died in the line of duty along with her colleague Pc Fiona Bone, 32, from Sale.

Mr Hughes has since raised more than £300,000 for the Nicola Hughes Memorial Fund - providing support, educational opportunities and career training for young people bereaved by violent crime.
