It started as a 'play fight' outside a pub... and ended in a man's ear bitten off

A man had part of his ear bitten off during a 'savage' fight outside a pub.

Lewis Heywood, 20, left the man needing plastic surgery following the fracas outside the Samuel Brooks pub in Sale.

Heywood was also bit and injured during the brawl, which started as a 'play fight' but quickly escalated.

The other man hit Heywood with a 'milk churn', and the defendant threw an ashtray.

"It was clearly a savage fight between the two of you," a judge said, as Heywood was jailed for 21 months.

"For some reason a fight broke out between you and another man in that group.

"It was an intense fight, it may have begun as a play fight but it became extremely violent."

The brawl happened outside the pub on the afternoon of April 21, when Heywood was there with a group of friends.

A woman who worked at the pub tried to break it up but was 'too terrified to intervene' and called police.

Punches were thrown, and Heywood kicked out towards the man's head as he was on the ground, prosecutor Tom Sherrington told Minshull Street Crown Court.

He hit Heywood to the ribs with a 'milk churn'.

During the fight Heywood bit him three times, removing part of his ear and also biting him twice on the arm.

He has since required plastic surgery, the court heard.

The fight had stopped by the time police arrived, but the incident was covered by CCTV.

Both men were taken to hospital and also arrested.

Heywood, of Hempcroft Road, Timperley, pleaded guilty to affray.

Defending, Andy Evans said it wasn't Heywood who threw the first punch, but he accepted he 'went too far'.

He said Heywood had made progress after a previous court appearance, finding work in a warehouse.

Heywood was also bitten and injured during the fight, the court heard.

Jailing him, Judge Bernadette Baxter said Heywood had a 'poor' criminal record.

He had breached a previous suspended sentence imposed for possessing cannabis with intent to supply, and possessing a knife.
