'It spoke to me' - Ralf Rangnick managerial style praised amid Manchester United criticism

Former player turned coach Bradley Carnell, who played under current Manchester United interim boss Ralf Rangnick, has hailed the impact he has had on his career to date.

Carnell, now 44, featured under Rangnick whilst the German was at Stuttgart from 1999-2001 and believes his influence was key during his playing days.

Having recently agreed to become the manager of Major League Soccer side St Louis City, the former professional is embarking on a new chapter away from his playing days.

With previous experience as assistant at New York Red Bulls more recently, Carnell insists Rangnick also helped improve his outlook not only as a player, but as a person too.

“Playing a certain way from a young age, and then having it instilled as a professional and then Ralf Rangnick coming [to Stuttgart] in 1999, he was demanding and was willing us to be a certain type of player," began the former South Africa international.

''It spoke to me and spoke to my character as a person from a physical standpoint and from a mental standpoint too.''

In a professional career that stretched across 18 years, Carnell is thankful for the opportunities given to him by Rangnick during his career, looking back on a strong bond the pair have developed.

“It was a good time for him as a coach and me as a player. We made it to the UEFA Cup final and we maintained a link.

''In 2014 we reignited our relationship. We’ve been in constant exchanges since then, and now he’s part of the global brand with Red Bull. The Stuttgart imprint is quite big within the brand now.”
