'It seems like it's all going against him' - Nottingham Forest's Zach Clough suffers fresh setback in tough season

It has been a “disappointing season” for Nottingham Forest's Zach Clough, with the forward now struggling to get much more game time before the summer.

The 24-year-old has found it tough to make much of an impact on loan at Rochdale, and now faces a spell on the sidelines with a recurrence of an ankle injury which also kept him out of action earlier on this term.

Clough has made 12 appearances for the League One club, with his sole goal coming on his debut, in a 2-1 Checkatrade Trophy victory over Bury.

He returned to the City Ground midway through the campaign and took part in Martin O’Neill’s first training session as manager, before returning to Spotland for the rest of the season.

However, the move hasn’t quite panned out how the former Bolton Wanderers man would have hoped – and he has now been ruled out for the next few weeks.

“Zach has had a scan on his ankle and it’s a similar problem to what he’s had before,” Rochdale’s first-team coach Brian Barry-Murphy, speaking before the weekend, told the club website.

“He’s going to be out for three or four weeks.

“It has been a disappointing season for Zach.

"He hasn’t been able to get on the training pitch for long enough periods to make himself fit and robust enough to go into games and sustain the knocks that are inevitable in games.

“It seems like it’s all going against him at the moment in time, but that’ll change for him because he wants to work hard.”

Clough made the move to the City Ground from the Trotters in January 2017 and has made 31 appearances for the club, scoring four goals.
