Little pub with a big heart: SA hotel calls for donations for families impacted by NSW fires

Helen Hatch lost her home in the Pinery bushfire and now wants to help those affected by the New South Wales fires.

In 2015, Helen Hatch and her family lost their home in the Pinery bushfire, escaping with just the clothes on their back.

Four years later, the owner of Freeling's Gungellan Hotel said she felt compelled to help those now experiencing the same devastation as bushfires tear through parts of New South Wales.

"We know exactly how these people feel," Ms Hatch said.

"It's still very raw for a lot of people.

"It's very close to our hearts here in Freeling."

Ms Hatch has started calling for donations to send to those impacted by the New South Wales fires.

All donations are welcome including money, gift vouchers, clothes, toiletries, children's toys, books, pet food and medical supplies.

"It's the simple daily things that you would go to grab that you no longer have," Ms Hatch said.

"Just the simple things, you wake up and you don't have any knickers, you haven't got socks."

The bushfires in New South Wales have claimed the lives of three people and destroyed more than 150 homes.

On November 25, it will be four years since the Pinery bushfire tore through communities in South Australia's Mid North, killing two people and destroying nearly 100 homes.

Ms Hatch said it felt like yesterday.

"You're still rebuilding, there's a lot of people who still have the burnt-out cars in their paddocks, they still haven't rebuilt their homes," she said.

"You still very, very happy that you're alive [but] you haven't got the kids' photographs, you haven't got their baby books, you haven't got the photos of the kids' weddings or christenings.

"The past is just wiped out, gone, but you still have your memories."

In the aftermath of the Pinery bushfire, the Gungellan Hotel became a drop-off point for donations for locals and the community raised $49,000 which was distributed to affected towns.

Staff to drive donations over the border

Gungellan Hotel staff member Julie Anne Kelly said she hoped they would receive enough donations to fill a truck, which she and a friend will drive over the border to NSW in early December.

"That's what happens in small towns, everyone just gets in and helps, they don't want anyone to miss out or suffer," she said.

"It's very close to Christmas and there are a lot of kids there that may miss out."

Donations can be dropped off at the Gungellan Hotel in Freeling or to Dave Benson Caravans in Kilburn.
