Stephen Fry has admitted that he regrets that he didn’t start a family.

The 65-year-old actor has shared that his decision to not have children when he was younger has left the ‘biggest hole’ in his life.

The Dropout star, who married Elliott Spencer, 35, in 2015, said: “I mean, that’s probably the biggest hole in my life experience.

“I’ve had opportunities, I suppose, to have had children. I could have sorted something out.

“There is a part of me that obviously feels in another world, if I’d timed things right, I might have had children.”

The Black Adder actor also admitted that while he and Spencer have discussed starting a family, they haven’t pursued it seriously.

“Elliott and I, we talked about it a bit, but we never talked about it to the extent of, ‘Right, so, we’re going to a clinic tomorrow to talk this through to some expert’”, he told The Mirror.

However, having children in his extended family does fill some of the gap.

He added: “I have many godchildren now, nieces and nephews, and great-nieces and great-nephews, but I’ll never experience a child growing up.

“It’s a slight sadness.”

The QI presenter, who is godfather to three of his actor pal Hugh Laurie’s children, previously also opened up about his past relationships that led to depression and suicidal thoughts.

The star also recently admitted that he felt “lost and adrift” during his “disastrous childhood” after he was expelled from multiple schools.

Following his expulsions, the comedian, who has bipolar disorder, told the Diary of A CEO podcast that he attempted suicide aged 17.
