It’s still too early to book a summer holiday abroad says UK government minister Grant Shapps

Transport Secretary Grant Shapps has said he is "hopeful" that people will be able to travel abroad this summer but warned there were no "cast iron guarantees".

Though most coronavirus rules that affect people are set by the Welsh Government there are certain areas where the UK Government still have a dominant role.

Powers at Wales and Westminster will both play a role in whether people here can go on foreign holidays this summer but the UK Government's responsibility for foreign affairs will mean it will play a key role in striking the bilateral deals that will make foreign travel possible.

England has set out a roadmap for overseas travel but Wales has not yet published one.

Mr Shapps said that under the road map out of lockdown in England, the earliest people would be able to travel overseas was May 17 and he urged caution when it came to booking.

"We know you won't be able to travel until May 17. I would say that it makes sense to see how the course of the pandemic unlock proceeds," he told Times Radio.

"I am hopeful but, as with everything to do with this virus, you can't say for certain.

"There are a lot of issues that we need to work around but I am working with international partners, both governments and organisations, to try to make it happen. We can't provide cast iron guarantees on it."

Throughout the pandemic when questioned about people in Wales flying from English airports the First Minister Mark Drakeford has said that "once you cross the border you must follow the rules in that country".

People returning for holiday and failing to isolate is believed to be one of the key ways in which the virus was seeded back into Welsh communities after the summer.
