'It's sexist': Shopper claims he was banned from Tesco for being topless - but bikini-clad wife was allowed in

A man says he was banned from his local Tesco for being topless - but that his wife who was wearing a bikini was allowed in.

Liam Friday, 48, claims he was made to wait outside the Tesco Express store in Lordswood, Kent, as he had ditched his top when temperatures hit 30 degrees Celsius on Sunday.

The 48-year-old said he was shocked when his wife Michelle, in her 40s, was allowed in to shop despite wearing a scanty swimwear, The Mirror reports.

Liam and wife Michelle had just finished a family barbecue on the scorching Bank Holiday Sunday when nipped out to their local shop.

Liam even says he had been allowed in the same shop earlier that day while shirtless but says he was told to wait outside by a security guard who allowed his partner to go in.

"It was 30C on a scorching hot day, it was ridiculous" he said.

"It's a supermarket, not a restaurant or a bar - that I would completely understand.

"My wife literally had a small bikini top on, it's 2019 not 1960."

"I went in there earlier the same day without a shirt on and it was no problem.

"But when the security guard was there I wasn't allowed in."

He is calling on Tesco to change their policy to allow topless men in the aisles accusing bosses of sexism.

"I don't understand, it doesn't offend anyone" he said.

"He was quite happy to let her in. It's sexist.

"She went inside but I thought I'm not going to spend my money in here if they aren't letting me in.

"We went to the Premier down the road and it was no problem.

"Then another man without a shirt on tried to get in and he wasn't allowed either.

"The thing for me is we're supposed to have equal rights, but it feels like men are being treated worse than women here."

A spokesman for Tesco said that the supermarket has no dress code, but staff for individual stores can show discretion.

The spokesman added that they are investigating the incident.
