Mark Webber, the former F1 driver, has expressed his shock over the accident which has left the IndyCar driver Justin Wilson fighting for his life.

The Briton remains in a coma having been stuck in the head by a large piece of debris that broke off a car at Pocono Raceway in Pennsylvania on Sunday. The 37-year-old hit an inside safety wall while driving at high speed and was soon airlifted to Lehigh Valley Health Network Cedar Crest Hospital in Allentown.

Wilson, who competed in the 2003 Formula One world championship, is married with two young daughters. His family, including younger brother Stefan, who is also an IndyCar driver, are believed to be by his hospital bedside.

“I got to know Justin when we were together on the junior racing scene in the late 1990s. And we were team-mates at Jaguar Racing in 2003,” said Webber, the former Red Bull driver who know drives for Porsche in endurance racing. “I was totally shocked when I heard the news. It looked like a nasty one, and it’s been on my radar all day. But motorsport is sensational when we hit a bumpy road and someone gets hurt.

“We all pull together and it is reassuring to know that he’s in very good hands. I’m boxing for him, as I know everyone else is in motorsport.”
