'It's really dangerous': Huge piece of metal falls from construction site onto Trinity Way

A driver watched in horror as a 'huge piece of metal' fell from a building and onto a busy road during rush-hour in Salford .

The woman said she heard a loud bang as the panel landed on Trinity Way , near the junction with Chapel Street , just before 9am today.

Photos from the scene showed the external panel missing from the building, which is midway through construction.

Below, a piece of metal is in the middle of the carriageway, which is filled with cars.

The owners of the development, Grainger PLC, said they will investigate as a 'matter of urgency'.

An eyewitness, who did not want to be named, said she was driving along the road in the opposite direction when she heard a bang.

She said: "I was just driving around the ring road, it was about 8.55am this morning. I heard the bang when it dropped.

"I looked from the corner of my eye and I saw a piece of metal falling from a height into the middle of the road. Fortunately there weren't any cars on the road. As it was falling, that's when there were cars coming.

"I was just shocked. It's concerning, how has this been allowed to happen? It's very close to the road. That shouldn't be happening.

"I take that route every day back home. That could have hit a car. It was really dangerous."

The building is advertised as a property being constructed for Grainger PLC, who confirmed they will 'own and operate the building upon completion'.

A spokeswoman said: “We are naturally concerned to see this image and have been in touch with the contractor Sir Robert McAlpine to investigate this as a matter of urgency.”

Sir Robert McAlpine and Salford Council have been contacted for comment.
