'It's quite upsetting to see...' residents react as bomb squad descend on leafy street after 'suspicious materials' found

People living on a leafy suburban street in north Manchester have reacted with shock after the bomb squad descended on a house this afternoon (October 20).

Police were alerted to 'suspicious materials' found inside a residential property on Charlestown Road in Blackley today at about 1.35pm.

The incident prompted a large-scale response, with bomb disposal officers spotted arriving at the scene shortly afterwards.

A section of the residential street, which is lined with large semi-detached houses, was taped off by officers.

The area cordoned off runs parallel to Boggart Hole Clough.

Police and bomb disposal officers were seen emerging from the property with several packages, one reportedly with tape and tubes of sealant.

Greater Manchester Police have since confirmed that the materials found have been deemed "non-suspicious."

Bomb squad teams are now understood to have left the area, several hours after the 999 call was made.

Residents who live in the area expressed their shock as they watched the dramatic incident unfold this afternoon.

An eyewitness said he saw police descend on a house near to the junction of Charlestown Road and Polefield Road earlier this afternoon.

"I didn't think much of it," he said. "The next thing, the bomb squad was outside.

"This a residential area, so it's quite upsetting to see something like that."

Charlestown Road has since reopened to the public.

A spokesperson for GMP confirmed they had attended the address along with the Explosive Ordnance Disposal team.

They added that following a thorough assessment of the materials, they were were deemed not to be suspicious.

The spokesperson said: "At around 1.36pm today (20 October 2021) police were called with a report of suspicious materials found at a property on Charlestown Road, Moston.

"Officers attended as well as the Explosive Ordnance Disposal team.

"Following assessment of the materials they were deemed to be non-suspicious."
