'It's pretty scary': Gun found in yard during Wallaroo lockdown

The handgun was found by residents in a Wallaroo backyard during a police manhunt for Jake Dohnt

A handgun has been found by residents in a backyard in Wallaroo, in South Australia, during a hunt for a man who was shot at by police yesterday.

The Wallaroo man was involved in a police pursuit early on Monday morning.

He was later seen by police in the township and allegedly pointed a gun at them, with police firing a shot at him before he ran off.

Police banned people from entering parts of the town as they searched for Jake Dohnt, 25, who has been on the run for more than 36 hours.

Mark, a resident on Prince Street who was allowed back into his property last night, said a man had attempted to enter his home after jumping the fence.

He said he found the gun this afternoon when he went to look in the backyard.

Footage of the gun — obtained exclusively by the ABC — shows it lying in grass near a fence.

"I just walked out here and seen it," Mark said.

"I was actually jealous when I found it because I wanted to keep it."

"Well it's pretty scary when you find that in your backyard.

"I reckon he's come through and jumped that fence there and gone around the front, come in our lounge room and then the old fella's told him to f*** off."

Some residents spent Monday night at the town hall after being told they could not return to their houses in the declared area.

The declared area of the town was bounded by Cornish Terrace, East Terrace, Ryan Street and Gouge Street and residents had been urged to stay inside their locked homes.

While the dangerous area declaration has been removed, there is still a cordoned off crime scene in Daly Street, Wallaroo, being examined by forensic investigators.

Police have been trying to contact Mr Dohnt on his mobile, and believe he is being harboured by local residents.

When last seen, he was wearing black long pants, a black windcheater with a white motif on the front, and a black cap.

Police have asked anyone who has information about his location to contact the Police Assistance Line on 131 444 or triple-0.
