Gender policies have been at the forefront of the UK political scene this week after Rishi Sunak blocked Nicola Sturgeon’s controversial trans reforms and a ban on conversion therapy was announced.

Other big talking points included teachers voting to take seven days of strike action and Jeremy Clarkson issuing an apology to the Duke and Duchess of Sussex over comments he made in his column in The Sun.

Jacinda Ardern also announced on early on Thursday that she will step down as prime minister of New Zealand. Read on to see how Telegraph Readers contributed to the conversation in the comments section and the Front Page newsletter.

Gender wars

Rishi Sunak blocked Nicola Sturgeon’s controversial gender reforms on Tuesday, escalating already simmering tensions between Downing Street and Holyrood.

Meanwhile, ministers confirmed they will bring in a ban on conversion therapy, including for transgender people.

Many readers backed the Prime Minister’s decision to block Ms Sturgeon’s gender reforms accusing them of posing a "danger to women in safe spaces".

UK teachers announce strike

Teachers in England and Wales announced they will go on strike in February and March after members of the National Education Union voted in favour of action in a dispute over pay.

Readers sympathised with challenges facing teachers, however, many thought it wrong to deny children face-to-face education - especially given the missed time they faced during the pandemic.

Jeremy Clarkson’s apology

Jeremy Clarkson issued an apology following backlash over his comments about the Duchess of Sussex in his column in The Sun newspaper. This came as it emerged Amazon will “likely” drop the television presenter.

Most readers backed Jeremy Clarkson's sentiments and his right of free speech and criticised cancel culture.

Jacinda Ardern resigns as PM of New Zealand

In a shock announcement on Thursday, New Zealand leader Jacinda Ardern announced she will step down from the role because she "no longer had enough in the tank" to do the job justice.

Readers welcomed the news of Ms Ardern’s resignation with many giving what they saw as the “unnecessary” locking down of the country during the pandemic as one of the main reasons.
