Group of young doctors found after two nights missing in Central Australian outback

Gabrielle Freedman (at left), Haydn Dodds, Jessica Kolic, Shagun Narula and Renae Walker set out camping on Saturday.

A group of young doctors has been located after getting bogged and spending two nights in the remote Central Australian outback.

The group was supposed to meet friends at Ruby Gap — a remote desert campsite 150 kilometres east of Alice Springs — on Saturday night, but never arrived.

They've been identified as Gabrielle Freedman, 29, Haydn Dodds, 29, Jessica Kolic, 29, Shagun Narula, 27 and Renae Walker, 31.

"They left Saturday evening at about five o'clock, and were due back Sunday afternoon," Senior Sergeant Darryl Kerr said.

"The group was supposed to meet another group that had left earlier that morning from Alice Springs, but they didn't catch up with them."

Emergency services launched an aerial search at first light this morning and the group was found at lunchtime.

NT Police said it appeared they had inadvertently taken a wrong turn, driven 5 kilometres down a dry river bed and bogged their Toyota Hilux.

A helicopter located the group leaving the area by foot.

Nobody was injured.

Family and friends 'very concerned'

Ruby Gap is a nature park in the East MacDonnell Ranges.

It is accessible only by a notoriously challenging four-wheel drive track.

Earlier in the day, Sergeant Kerr said the group's family and friends were concerned by their disappearance.

"The people they were supposed to camp with are very concerned," Senior Sergeant Kerr said.

"We've had a number calls from family saying it's out of character."

Police were unsure how much food and water the group had with them.

Three of the people were flown back to Alice Springs via helicopter earlier today.

Authorities are helping two others recover the ute so they can drive back.
