'It's okay not to enjoy it' - Former Bristol City star opens up on early retirement

Lewin Nyatanga says he has no regrets over his decision to take an early retirement from football.

Former Bristol City star Nyatanga called time on his playing career in February 2019, aged just 29.

He made 105 appearances for the Robins between 2009 and 2013 before joining Barnsley, and also represented Wales 34 times.

Yet, in a BT Sport documentary, Nyatanga, who is now a personal trainer, revealed that, despite mixed feelings that initially greeted his retirement, he had no regrets.

He said: "Of course two months into leaving you're thinking 'should I have gone back?'

"But when I sat down and went over it logically without the emotion of fear, of course I wanted to leave.

"I definitely don't regret it."

Nyatanga also addressed the expectation on footballers to enjoy their careers.

"I know I was privileged," he added.

"I sacrificed my life for it, but it's OK to not enjoy it.

"I still put my heart and soul into it, but I didn't enjoy the process.

"But to be honest, I think if you give your everything, enjoying it or not, does it make any difference?

"I still gave everything to it, so does it really matter?

"You're going back to fairytales now, you're going back to Roy of the Rovers stuff and therefore I am thinking it's pefect.

"It's just not like that, but nothing in life is.

"Of course it's not just football, there's many positives I am well aware of, so it's definitely not bad.

"There's amazing things in football, but let's get the balance to understand that it isn't all perfect."
