It's official - Nottingham is the friendliest place in the UK

What makes a friendly neighbourhood?

Having a regular chat with people on the same street? Taking in parcels without moaning? Organising and taking part in local events?

Well, whatever it is, a new survey says that the friendliest city in the UK is.....Nottingham. (Let's be honest, we wouldn't be doing this if it wasn't.)

Mobile phone company giffgaff carried out a survey of 2,000 people across the country to ask them if they were on good terms with their neighbours.

What forecasters say about claims 'Spanish plume' could lead to 3-month heatwave

And 98% of people in Nottingham said they did, the highest percentage in the country.

The top ten was:

1. Nottingham 98%

2. Cardiff 97%

3. Newcastle 95%

3. Liverpool 95%

3. Leicester 95%

6. Oxford 94%

6. Glasgow 94%

6. Leeds 94%

9. Plymouth 93%

10. Brighton 92%

As giffgaff points out, there were only three southern towns in the top 10 friendliest cities - Oxford, Brighton and Plymouth - and none of them made the top five.

As for the least friendliest cities, Sheffield won that particular 'accolade', with only 17% of people saying they were on good terms with their neighbours.

The bottom 10 was:

1. Sheffield

2. Bristol

3. Edinburgh

4. Norwich

5. Manchester

6. London

7. Birmingham

8. Cambridge

9. Cheltenham

10. Southampton

The survey also looked at what people thought the top five signs of 'community spirit' in a neighbourhood were.

The survey said:

1. Signing for a neighbour's parcel (72% of people thought this was a sign of community spirit)

2. Chatting with neighbours over the garden fence (57%)

3. Donating to local charities (31%)

4. Helping people out on online forums (17%)

5. Having a neighbourhood WhatsApp group (11%)
