Glasgow weather: the best day to have a BBQ in Glasgow according to last five years of forecasts

Glasgow has been having some great weather recently - known to us Scots as 'taps aff' weather.

Inevitably as summer approaches, disposable BBQs start to sell out and everyone refreshes the weather app to plan their feast. Thankfully, the work into which day we should be having a BBQ has been done for us and research shows that July 19 is the best day.

Home experts at Thomas Sanderson, who offer bespoke blinds and curtains, undertook the research to discover which date in July is likely to be the hottest.

After analysing weather data in July over a period of five years, they pinpointed the average temperature of each date in the month to determine which day is likely to have the best weather.

The research revealed that in Glasgow, the average temperature is 21 degrees on July 19 with the coolest day occurring on July 4 where the average temperature is 17 degrees - a difference of just 4 degrees.

The team looked at a total of 23 locations across the UK including Edinburgh and found on average the warmest day is July 25 across the UK whilst the coolest day is July 28 - handy for anyone planning a getaway.

Richard Petrie, spokesperson for Thomas Sanderson, commented: “It’s nice to spend more time outdoors in the summer months and good weather is known to have many overall health benefits.

If you plan on having a BBQ when it’s warm, remember to stay hydrated and wear plenty of sun cream and take breaks inside if you feel yourself getting too hot.

We found it surprising to see average temperatures across the UK differ so much year on year. It might be a good idea to keep hold of an umbrella as we all know, the UK weather can be very unpredictable!”

Now that Glasgow is in Level 2, we have a bit more freedom to travel meaning we can find a sunny spot in a park and enjoy our food before the cold weather kicks in.

So whether you sit and soak up the sun in Kelvingrove, Glasgow Green or Pollok Park, it's good to know the rules surrounding your disposable BBQs to prevent getting into trouble and causing damage.

Recently, a Glasgow City Council spokesman told Glasgow Live that barbecues are allowed in Glasgow parks "provided due care and attention is paid to the risk of fire and of scorch damage to parks furniture and grass.

"If a disposable barbeque is lit and then placed directly on to grass or park furniture it will cause damage.

All litter and debris must be disposed of in the appropriate manner."

At Level 2 you can currently:

  • meet socially in groups of up to:
    • 6 people from 3 households in your home or theirs – and can stay overnight
    • 6 people from 3 households in an indoor public place like a café, pub or restaurant
    • 8 people from 8 households outdoors
  • under 12s do not count towards the total number of people or households meeting outside but do count towards household numbers indoors
  • you do not need to physically distance from family and friends in a private home
  • you can travel anywhere in Scotland in Levels 0, 1 or 2 but must not enter a Level 3 or 4 area unless you have a permitted reason like going to work or caring for a vulnerable person
  • you can travel to England, Wales, Northern Ireland, the Isle of Man or the Channel Islands - before you travel you must check the travel rules in those countries
  • you can provide informal childcare, for example to look after a grandchild
  • up to 50 people can attend weddings and funerals
  • tradespeople can carry out any work in your home such as painting, decorating or repairing
  • you should work from home where possible

Two metre physical distancing should be maintained between members of different households.
