It’s not new for Republicans and the MAGA crowd to use lies and empty promises to make a point. However, lately, they have become more shameless about it, possibly because they do not consult each other before speaking out.
U.S. Secretary of War Pete Hegseth announced on Friday that, as a sign of the growing friendship between the United States and Qatar, the U.S. had agreed to sign “a letter of acceptance to build a Qatar Emiri Air Force facility at the Mountain Home Airbase in Idaho.” Following this announcement, several people, including many Republicans, opposed the move and called them out publicly in an effort to dissuade them, including long-time Trump supporter Laura Loomer, who said that she felt “betrayed” by the revelation. Throughout several social media posts, she conveyed her disdain for the decision while demonstrating notable Islamophobia towards the Qatari people, a behaviour she has not tried to disguise.
Recently, United States Vice President JD Vance had an awkward moment on television concerning Hegseth’s comments. When asked about Hegseth’s claims of establishing a Qatari base in the U.S., Vance dismissed them by referring to it as a “largely fake story” He said:
“This is largely a fake story. We continue to have, with countries that we work with, we have relationships where sometimes their pilots work on our bases, sometimes that we train together, sometimes we work together in other ways. The reporting that somehow there’s going to be a Qatari base on United States soil, that’s just not true.”
He further continued:
“We’re not going to let a foreign country have an actual base on American soil. So there’s a bit of misreporting on that, as there often is.”
This entire situation seems a bit fishy. As Republicans deliberate on what to say publicly, it wouldn’t be surprising to wake up one day to news confirming that Qatar is indeed establishing an airbase in the U.S.
