It's not Celtic Park, but Broadwood crowd can give Airdrie a lift, says star

Rico Quitongo hopes Airdrie fans will get right behind their side as they try to beat Clyde to win the NL Cup at Broadwood this afternoon.

The defender says it might not be 70,000 fans in the white-hot cauldron of Parkhead, but he says having anybody in the stand at all makes a massive difference.

Quitongo says playing for Dumbarton last season without supporters was at times brutal and insists he would welcome any noise at all - even if they get on his back.

And he says the Diamonds are serious about getting their hands on silverware this afternoon.

Airdrie scored two late goals to see off Cumbernauld Colts in the first semi-final, and set up a final showdown against Clyde at the Cumbernauld stadium, and Quitongo admits they're looking to step it up.

He said: It was good having fans in there yesterday, cheering us on, and it was good to have them as the 'extra man'.

"It was amazing. It might not be Parkhead, it might not be 70,000 people, but just those people being there and encouraging you is great - even if they're on your back, you'd rather have something.

"Last season when I was at Dumbarton it was brutal, honestly, it felt like you were at a reserve game, so having fans back in was great.

"My dad [former Hamilton and Hearts legend Jose] even got down to see me for the first time in a while, but I think he's just a big-game occasion guy though!"

Quitongo added: "It's pre-season, usually nobody takes it too seriously, but it is competitive, it is a cup.

"The boys showed a bit of resilience to get the win. We made it hard for ourselves, but that resilience showed and we came through with two goals in the end, so it's good to have.

"It's going to be a good game against Clyde, a challenging game, and it's a good test before the League Cup starts.

"Clyde are not an easy team to play against, I was up against them in the league, so it will be good to see how the new boys do against them tomorrow, myself included, and I'm looking forward to it.

"They have their main threat in David Goodwillie, but no doubt they've added some other good players as well.

"It's great to be playing games like this and to set ourselves up for the game against Annan next week."
